Chapter 9

MORE THAN ANYTHING, Simone wanted to be alone with Kyle. She wanted to hear about his time in Norway and update him on her own adventures. But since Sylvie had scheduled the whole day for him at the factory—a gesture that, according to Kyle, was quite generous—Simone knew he couldn’t get away.

“I’ll call you as soon as we’re done here,” he’d promised. This time she made certain he got the right number and her full name. And just to be safe, she got his number as well. But before they parted ways, Oncle Arnou began planning a celebratory family dinner for the same evening, insisting that Kyle and Noel must come as well and that he would ask Leon and Nicole to cater the affair.

Simone gratefully agreed to come, but when Oncle Arnou announced they would hold the festive dinner at Tante Estelle’s house, she wasn’t so sure. Exchanging glances with Noel, she knew he questioned the location as well. He even asked her uncle if he was sure his elderly sister would approve of these plans, but Oncle Arnou just waved him off.

“Arnou says she often hosts relatives in the family home,” Noel quietly told Simone. “The house has room for a crowd.”

That didn’t really address her concerns, but maybe it didn’t matter. Somehow with Kyle here, it felt similar to flying in a plane; she could face anything. Even her cranky old aunt!
